NTR stands for nuclear thermal rocket. In this propulsion system, a nuclear fission reactor replaces the chemical combustion chamber to generate extreme heat. A lightweight propellant, typically liquid hydrogen, is pumped through the reactor core, where it expands rapidly and accelerates out the nozzle. This configuration offers roughly double the specific impulse of the best chemical rockets, making it attractive for deep space missions.
If we want to cut the Mars transit time in half, we've to baseline an NTR for the transfer vehicle.
