NPP stands for the NPOESS Preparatory Project, which was renamed the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership. It is a bridge mission designed to test Earth-observing instruments and ensure continuity of climate data across polar-orbiting networks. The satellite carries advanced radiometers and sounders to track atmospheric temperatures, ozone layers, and global weather patterns.
