Underride

nounStandard termAutomotive

An underride is a collision where a smaller vehicle slides underneath the chassis of a larger truck or trailer.

An underride collision happens when a passenger car crashes into the rear or side of a heavy commercial truck and is forced underneath the higher vehicle bed. This bypasses the car's crumple zones and airbags, often shearing off the roof and passenger compartment. Commercial trailers are fitted with heavy steel guards to prevent these catastrophic impacts.
