Aquaplane

verbStandard termAutomotive

To lose steering and braking control when tires ride on a layer of standing water.

To slide uncontrollably because the vehicle tires cannot displace water fast enough to maintain contact with the road surface. The tire tread gets overwhelmed, lifting the rubber completely off the pavement and leaving the driver with zero mechanical grip.

Heard on the job

If you aquaplane on that stretch of highway, take your foot off the gas and don't touch the brakes.
