A permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PSM) relies on rare-earth magnets built into the rotor instead of electromagnets to create a magnetic field. This design offers high efficiency and continuous torque at high speeds, making it a popular choice for electric vehicle traction motors. Because the rotor's magnetic field is constant, the motor controller must precisely synchronize the stator's alternating current to match the rotor's position.
The new EV platform uses a PSM on the rear axle for better efficiency and a standard induction motor up front.
