Dually

nounShop talkAutomotive

A heavy-duty pickup truck equipped with dual rear wheels on each side.

A dually is a pickup truck or chassis cab that features four wheels on the rear axle instead of two. This dual-rear-wheel configuration spreads the payload over a larger contact patch, massively increasing the towing capacity, payload rating, and stability when hauling heavy trailers. They are instantly recognizable by their wide, flared rear fenders.

Heard on the job

I can't fit the dually on the two-post lift, we'll have to use the drive-on rack.

Insider tip

When changing tires on a dually, always check the inner wheel for hidden damage or underinflation, as it takes the brunt of the load but is harder to inspect.
