Air-blown asphalt

nounStandard termAsphalt

A modified binder created by bubbling oxygen through hot liquid asphalt to increase its stiffness and raise its softening point.

This specialized binder is produced by blowing air through molten asphalt flux at high temperatures. The oxidation process alters the chemical structure, making the asphalt less sensitive to temperature changes and more resistant to flowing. While common in roofing applications, it is rarely used in standard paving mixes because the oxidation makes the material too brittle for flexible pavements.

We can't use air-blown asphalt for this surface course because it will crack under traffic loading.
