Tap

Tap turns up in 2 fields: corrosion, fasteners. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Corrosion & Cathodic Protection

Tap in corrosion

Adjustable transformer setting on a rectifier, used to raise or lower DC output in coarse and fine steps.

One of the connection points on a rectifier transformer's secondary winding that sets the output voltage. Most units have a coarse tap bar and a fine tap bar labelled with letters and numbers, and techs move the links between them to step output up or down. Raising the tap is the first fix for low readings; dropping it fixes overprotection and interference complaints.

"Bumped the rec from tap C3 to C4, output went from 12 to 15 amps, recheck the low posts tomorrow."

Fasteners & Threads

Tap in fasteners

A fluted cutting tool used to create internal threads in a pre-drilled hole.

A hardened steel tool with cutting edges and flutes designed to cut or form internal female threads in a hole. Taps come in various profiles, such as taper, plug, and bottoming, to dictate how aggressively the threads are cut and how close they reach the bottom of a blind hole.

"Use a bottoming tap to get the threads all the way down so the set screw seats properly."
