Sticky

Sticky turns up in 2 fields: paper optics, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Paper Optics & Testing

Sticky in paper optics

A small glob of residual adhesive in recycled paper pulp.

A tacky contaminant particle originating from glues, tapes, and labels in recycled wastepaper furnish. Stickies agglomerate in the pulp and deposit on machine wires, felts, and calender rolls. When they press into the paper web, they create translucent windows, pull out fibers to leave holes, or cause breaks on the machine, severely degrading the visual quality and opacity of the sheet.

"We had a massive break on the dry end because a sticky built up on the first calender roll."

Telecom, Networking & IT

Sticky in telecom & it

A configuration or feature that forces a temporary state to remain persistent.

In networking, a setting that binds a dynamically learned attribute so it does not age out or change. For example, sticky MAC addresses on a switch port restrict access to the first device connected, and sticky sessions on a load balancer force a client's traffic to always route to the same backend server.

"Configure sticky MAC on that interface so nobody can unplug the terminal and plug in a rogue laptop."
