Spaghetti

Spaghetti turns up in 2 fields: electricians, fiber optics. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Electricians' Slang

Spaghetti in electricians

A tangled, disorganized mess of wires inside a panel or junction box.

An unprofessional and chaotic arrangement of conductors lacking proper routing, bundling, or length management. This condition makes tracing circuits difficult, traps heat, and increases the risk of accidental shorts when covers are removed. It is the hallmark of rushed work or multiple undocumented modifications over time.

"I opened up the main panel and it was pure spaghetti, so tracing that neutral took me an hour."

Fiber Optics

Spaghetti in fiber optics

A messy tangle of patch cords hanging in front of a rack, with no cable management or labeling.

The tangle that grows in a rack when jumpers are added without proper lengths, routing or management, until nobody can trace a cord or reach a port without unplugging something else. Beyond looking bad it causes outages when someone pulls the wrong jumper and overbends fibers where cords pile up. Cleanups usually mean labeling both ends and replacing everything with right-length jumpers.

"The MDF is pure spaghetti, we're doing the cleanup in a maintenance window or not at all."
