Racking

Racking turns up in 2 fields: powder coating, waterproofing. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Powder Coating

Racking in powder coating

The racks, hooks and fixtures that carry parts through the line, and the job of arranging parts on them.

Racking sets line density, how many parts are coated per hour, how well each part grounds and how evenly guns can reach it. Good racking spaces parts so they do not shadow each other, puts contact points where marks will not show and keeps parts from swinging into each other. Racks are stripped regularly so cured powder buildup does not cut off the ground.

"If we rack these two-high instead of one we double the parts per hour, but the bottom row will be thin."

Sealants & Waterproofing

Racking in waterproofing

An installation method where roofing materials are applied vertically up the slope rather than horizontally.

Racking is an application technique where shingles or tiles are installed straight up the roof deck in vertical columns. While this limits the distance an installer has to move across the roof, it requires lifting the edge of already-nailed shingles to tuck the next course underneath. Bending shingles this way can crack the fiberglass matting, especially in cold weather, and often voids manufacturer wind warranties.

"You can see where they were racking the field shingles because every fourth course has a torn edge from being forced under the nail."
