Phase

Phase turns up in 2 fields: electrotechnology, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Electrotechnology

Phase in electrotechnology

A single distinct oscillating voltage or current in a multi-conductor electrical system.

In an alternating current system, a phase refers to one of the individual voltage waveforms or the physical conductor that carries it. In standard three-phase power, there are three distinct phases separated by 120 electrical degrees. Electricians and engineers measure the voltage between these phases or between a single phase and the neutral conductor to verify system balance and correct rotation.

"We lost the red phase on the incoming feeder, which is why the induction motors are stalling."

Shop Floor Slang

Phase in shop slang

A distinct, manageable stage in a larger project or production schedule.

A defined period within a project lifecycle that focuses on a specific set of deliverables or tasks. Breaking complex work into these sequential steps helps managers track progress, allocate funding, and schedule resources. Moving from one to the next usually requires formal approval or a milestone review.

"We can't start ordering the structural steel until we officially close out the design phase."
