MMA

MMA turns up in 2 fields: adhesives, electronics. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Adhesives

MMA in adhesives

Methyl methacrylate, the monomer behind most structural acrylic adhesives and the shorthand name for them.

Methyl methacrylate adhesives are the main family of structural acrylics, used for bonding boat hulls to decks, truck body panels, wind blade parts, signs and composites. In conversation MMA names the adhesive type rather than the chemical. The monomer has a sharp, fruity odor at low concentrations, and MMA cells usually need local exhaust. Grades are rated by open time and fixture time.

"Bonding the deck flange with the 45-minute MMA so we have time to set the whole length."

Electronics & Semiconductors

MMA in electronics

Microelectronic modular assembly, a packaging technique that integrates multiple bare semiconductor dies into a single compact module.

Microelectronic modular assembly refers to the physical integration of various microelectronic components, such as bare IC dies, passive components, and interconnects, onto a single high-density substrate. This approach reduces parasitic inductance and capacitance by shortening trace lengths, while dramatically saving board space. It is heavily utilized in aerospace, military, and high-frequency RF applications where standard discrete packaging is too bulky.

"The radar transmit block uses a custom MMA to keep the RF path as short as possible between the power amplifier and the filter."
