Mixer

Mixer turns up in 2 fields: shop slang, electronics. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Shop Floor Slang

Mixer in shop slang

A mechanical device used to blend multiple ingredients or materials into a homogeneous batch.

A piece of industrial or construction equipment designed to combine dry and wet materials. On a job site, this usually refers to a rotating drum used to mix cement, sand, gravel, and water into concrete. In manufacturing, it can be a large vat with powered paddles used to blend chemicals, paints, or food products evenly.

"Wash out the mixer before that mortar cures inside the drum, or we'll be chipping it out with a hammer tomorrow."

Electronics & Semiconductors

Mixer in electronics

A non-linear circuit that combines two different input frequencies to generate new output frequencies.

An RF circuit block that takes two signals, typically a local oscillator and an incoming radio frequency, and multiplies them. This produces output signals at the sum and difference of the original frequencies. It is the fundamental component used for frequency translation, allowing receivers to shift high-frequency signals down to a manageable intermediate frequency for processing.

"The local oscillator is bleeding into the RF port, so we need a mixer with better port-to-port isolation."
