LPR

LPR turns up in 2 fields: corrosion, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Corrosion & Cathodic Protection

LPR in corrosion

Linear polarization resistance: an electrochemical method that reads corrosion rate in minutes in conductive liquids.

Linear polarization resistance: a technique that nudges a probe electrode's potential by about 10 to 20 mV and measures the resulting current. The ratio gives polarization resistance, which is inversely proportional to corrosion rate through the Stern-Geary relationship. LPR responds within minutes, ideal for tuning inhibitor dosing in water systems, but it needs a continuous conductive liquid and does not see pitting directly.

"LPR dropped from 8 mpy to under 1 within an hour of starting the inhibitor, that dose looks right."

Telecom, Networking & IT

LPR in telecom & it

The line printer remote protocol used for submitting print jobs over a network.

LPR stands for Line Printer Remote, a network protocol originally designed to send print jobs to Unix-based print spoolers. It operates over TCP port 515, transmitting both the file data and control commands that dictate how the document should be formatted. Although newer protocols exist, LPR remains widely supported by network printers and print servers as a highly reliable fallback method for direct IP printing.

"I configured the print server to use LPR with byte counting enabled so it stops dropping the large PDF jobs."
