Granny

Granny turns up in 2 fields: farming, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Farming & Horticulture

Granny in farming

An older ewe that attempts to steal a lamb from its actual mother.

An older female sheep that exhibits strong maternal instincts and tries to claim or nurse another ewe's newborn lamb. This behavior disrupts the critical bonding process between the true mother and her offspring, often leaving the stolen lamb underfed if the older ewe is not producing enough milk. Shepherds must watch for these older ewes in the lambing shed to prevent them from interfering with new mothers.

"Keep an eye on tag 402 in the bonding pen, she's turning into a granny and trying to steal twins from the young ewes."

Shop Floor Slang

Granny in shop slang

An exceptionally low gear ratio used for moving heavy loads at a crawl.

The lowest forward gear in a manual transmission, designed to provide maximum torque at very low speeds. Drivers and equipment operators use this gear exclusively to get a heavy load rolling from a dead stop, particularly on an incline or in deep mud. It is usually bypassed during normal, unladen driving because it tops out at a walking pace.

"Put the truck in granny and just let it crawl up the ramp so we don't spin the tires."
