EDR
EDR turns up in 2 fields: boilers, automotive. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
EDR in boilers
Equivalent direct radiation: the square-foot rating of heating radiators, used to size steam boilers.
Equivalent direct radiation. One square foot of EDR gives off 240 Btu per hour on steam and about 150 Btu per hour on hot water at standard conditions. Techs count the radiators, look up the EDR of each by height, columns and sections, total it, and then choose a steam boiler whose net rating matches the connected radiation. Sizing a steam boiler to heat loss instead leaves part of the system cold.
"Counted 620 square feet of EDR in the building, so we need a boiler with at least 620 net, never mind the heat loss calc."
EDR in automotive
An Event Data Recorder is a module that logs vehicle parameters during a crash.
An Event Data Recorder is an electronic module or software function that captures critical vehicle data in the moments before, during, and after a collision. It logs parameters like vehicle speed, throttle position, brake application, and seatbelt status. Investigators and manufacturers extract this data to reconstruct accidents and analyze safety system performance.
"I pulled the EDR report and it shows he was doing eighty with zero brake pressure before the airbag deployed."
