DTC
DTC turns up in 2 fields: railroad, automotive. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
DTC in railroad
Direct traffic control: authority granted by named blocks of track on unsignaled lines.
Direct traffic control divides a line into fixed blocks, each with a name and posted limit signs, and the dispatcher gives a train authority to occupy one or more of them by radio. The crew releases each block as the train clears it, which keeps the radio work lighter than copying a fresh warrant. DTC is common on lower-density lines in the West.
"We're in DTC from here west, so get the Hazen block from the DS and release it once the rear's by the sign."
DTC in automotive
A diagnostic trouble code generated by a vehicle computer to indicate a fault.
DTC stands for diagnostic trouble code, a standardized alphanumeric sequence generated by an onboard diagnostic system when it detects a malfunction. The code format usually starts with a letter indicating the system followed by four digits pointing to the specific circuit or component failure. Technicians retrieve these codes using a scan tool to begin their diagnostic process.
"I pulled the DTCs and got a P0300, so we've a random misfire to track down."
