Drop
Drop turns up in 2 fields: fiber optics, waterproofing. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Drop in fiber optics
The final fiber cable run from a distribution terminal on the street to a single customer building.
A small fiber cable, often one to twelve fibers, run aerially, buried or through conduit from a terminal or pedestal to the customer's premises. Drops are often pre-connectorized with hardened connectors that plug into the terminal without splicing. It is the last and most frequently damaged link in an FTTH network, cut by lawn mowers, landscapers and fence posts.
"Drop's cut where the homeowner put the new fence in, run a temporary across the yard and get a locate for the bore."
Drop in waterproofing
A vertical strip of facade worked from top to bottom on one setup of a swing stage or bosun's chair.
Facade crews break buildings into drops, each one the width they can reach from a suspended stage or chair. Work is scheduled, priced and tracked per drop: rake out, prime, rod, seal and tool from roof to ground, then move the rigging over. Drop counts tell everyone how far along the job is.
"We finished drop 7 on the east elevation, move the rig over and start 8 in the morning."
