Doghouse
Doghouse turns up in 2 fields: refractories, building. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Doghouse in refractories
Small extension on a glass melting furnace where the batch is charged into the tank.
Glass industry name for the small extension of the melter, at the back or side of the tank, where the batch charger pushes raw materials and cullet into the furnace. Doghouse refractories take a beating from cold batch, dust and alkali carryover, and the doghouse arch and sidewall blocks are among the most patched areas in a glass furnace.
"Doghouse arch is sagging over the left charger, get the hot repair crew to shim it before it drops."
Doghouse in building
A small, gabled roof structure built to cover a roof penetration, window, or equipment.
A small, protruding enclosure on a roof, typically built with its own miniature gable roof. It is most commonly used to describe a gabled dormer window, but it also refers to protective covers built over roof hatches, HVAC duct penetrations, or chimney chases.
"Flash the valley on that doghouse dormer carefully, they always want to leak if the step flashing isn't right."
