Rabbet joint

nounStandard termWoodworking

A simple woodworking joint formed by fitting the edge of one board into a recess cut along the edge of another.

This joint relies on a step-shaped recess, called a rabbet, cut along the edge or end of a workpiece. The mating piece sits inside this recess, creating a mechanical step that increases the gluing surface area and helps align the parts during assembly. It is commonly used for attaching cabinet backs, constructing simple boxes, and inset door panels.
