French cleat

nounStandard termWoodworking

A wall-mounting system using two interlocking boards cut at opposing 45-degree angles.

A highly secure mounting method made by ripping a board at a 45-degree angle. One half is fastened to the wall with the bevel pointing up and out, while the matching half is attached to the back of a cabinet or tool rack with the bevel pointing down and in. Gravity locks the two pieces together, distributing heavy loads across multiple wall studs without requiring precise fastener alignment on the hung object.

Heard on the job

We'll hang the upper cabinets on a French cleat so we can slide them left or right to line up perfectly.

Insider tip

Always leave a small gap at the top of the wall cleat so the matching piece can drop fully into the wedge without bottoming out.
