Butt hinge

nounStandard termWoodworking

A standard hinge designed to be mortised into the edge of a door and the door jamb.

This mechanism consists of two rectangular metal leaves joined by a central pin. It is installed by cutting shallow mortises into the edge of a door and the corresponding frame, allowing the leaves to sit flush with the wood surface. When the door is closed, the two leaves fold together, leaving only the knuckle of the pin visible from the outside.

Heard on the job

I need to rout the mortises for the butt hinges before we hang these solid core doors.

Insider tip

Always use a self-centering drill bit, or Vix bit, to drill the pilot holes for a butt hinge so the screws seat perfectly straight.
