Spiral wound gasket

nounStandard termValves

A flange gasket made of a V-shaped metal strip wound with a soft filler, held between an outer ring and usually an inner ring.

Stainless windings give strength and springback while graphite or PTFE filler between them does the sealing. A carbon steel outer ring centers the gasket inside the bolts and stops it being crushed too far, and an inner ring protects the windings from buckling into the bore. Color codes on the outer ring show winding metal and filler, so a fitter can read the gasket at a glance.
