Elbow

nounStandard termValves

A fitting that changes the direction of a pipe run, usually by 90 or 45 degrees.

Butt weld elbows come in long radius, with a centerline radius 1.5 times the nominal size, and short radius, equal to the nominal size, which takes up less space but adds pressure drop and erosion. Threaded and socket weld elbows are compact forged fittings. An elbow right at a pump suction or just upstream of a flow meter skews the velocity profile, so specs call for straight runs.

Heard on the job

Two long radius elbows and a 45 gets us around the column, I'll tack them up and you check my fall.
