Compression sock

nounStandard termTextiles

A specialized hosiery item knit with high-tension elastic fibers to apply graduated pressure to the lower leg.

A compression sock is a functional garment engineered to exert controlled, graduated pressure on the leg, tightest at the ankle and decreasing up the calf. Manufacturers knit these using strong elastane cores wrapped in nylon or cotton, ensuring specific millimeter of mercury (mmHg) ratings. They are constructed on specialized circular knitting machines that precisely control yarn tension row by row.

Heard on the job

The new medical line requires the circular knitters to be calibrated for a 20 to 30 mmHg gradient on the compression sock.
