MTSO stands for Mobile Telephone Switching Office. It is the core facility that connects individual cellular base stations to each other and to the public switched telephone network. The MTSO houses the switching equipment and databases required to track subscriber locations, manage handoffs between cell sites, and route calls to the correct destination.
The fiber cut isolated three towers, but the MTSO automatically rerouted the traffic through the microwave backup link.
