A beige box is a homemade lineman's handset built by phreaks to interface directly with telephone wiring. It functions identically to a standard rotary or touch-tone phone but replaces the standard wall plug with alligator clips. By attaching these clips to the terminals inside a network interface device or a pedestal, a user can place calls, eavesdrop, or test lines using another subscriber's connection.

Do not mix it up with
- Buttinsky: A buttinsky is the heavy-duty, professional handset used by telephone company technicians, whereas a beige box is a homemade equivalent built by hobbyists.
