AAL

abbreviationStandard termTelecom & IT

A protocol layer that formats higher-level data into standard cells for asynchronous transfer mode networks.

AAL stands for ATM Adaptation Layer, a networking framework that bridges user data streams and the fixed 53-byte cell structure of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. It segments variable-length packets, voice streams, or video feeds into small payloads and reassembles them at the destination. Different AAL types handle specific traffic profiles, ensuring that timing-sensitive voice and bursty computer data can share the same physical infrastructure.

Check the router configuration to ensure the AAL parameters match the carrier's requirements for the virtual circuit.
