A mechanical device historically used to automatically record elevations and distances.

An early mechanical cartography instrument designed to be pushed across terrain to automatically plot a topographic profile. As the wheel rolled, internal mechanisms translated the distance traveled and the changes in slope into a continuous graphical record of elevations.
