Typometry

nounStandard termPrinting

The historic technique of printing maps or technical drawings using specifically cast movable type.

A specialized letterpress method where complex graphics, such as maps or geometric diagrams, are assembled entirely from individual pieces of movable type. Instead of engraving a solid block, the compositor fits together tiny typographic elements representing lines, curves, and symbols to form the image. This technique requires extreme precision in casting and setting to ensure the disparate pieces lock up tightly into a cohesive graphic.
