A block of text set to a narrower measure than the main column to accommodate an illustration, initial cap, or other design element. The lines are carefully broken so the text visually contours the shape of the intruding object. In digital layout, this is handled automatically by text-wrap settings, but in metal type it requires calculating exact line lengths for the inset block.
