Autorouter

nounStandard termPCBs

A software tool that automatically generates copper traces between components on a circuit board.

An EDA software feature that calculates and draws copper traces to connect netlist nodes automatically. Users define rules for trace width, clearance, and layer usage, and the algorithm attempts to complete all connections. While useful for simple boards or non-critical signals, it often struggles with complex impedance control, analog signals, and optimal component placement.

Heard on the job

I ran the autorouter on the digital section just to see if the placement was viable before doing it by hand.

Insider tip

Veteran designers rarely use autorouters for an entire board, preferring to route critical signals manually and only using the tool for bulk connections like memory buses.
