20-degree gloss

nounStandard termPaper Optics

Specular gloss measured at a steep 20 degrees, used to separate very glossy papers, boards and prints.

At a steep angle only a truly smooth, highly reflective surface returns much light, so the 20-degree reading spreads out high-gloss grades that all look alike at 75 degrees. Cast-coated papers, varnished or laminated prints and photo papers are judged this way. A sheet that sits near the 75-degree ceiling can still show clear differences at 20 degrees.

Heard on the job

Both samples read 88 at 75 degrees, so run 20-degree gloss; the cast-coated one should pull ahead.
