Methods for detecting and quantifying internal contamination. In vivo methods count radiation leaving the body directly with a whole body counter or thyroid counter; in vitro methods analyse urine, faeces or other samples, which is the only option for nuclides like tritium or pure alpha emitters. Results feed biokinetic models that estimate the intake and the committed dose. Routine counts happen at hiring, periodically and at termination, with special counts after any suspected intake.
