Cropping

nounStandard termMining

An exposed mineral deposit at the surface that is actively being mined.

A surface exposure of a vein or seam that is rich enough to be directly excavated. Miners work a cropping by digging along the exposed strike, often using simple open-pit or trenching methods before deciding whether to sink a shaft or drive an adit for deeper extraction.

Heard on the job

The old-timers worked that cropping down to about thirty feet before the water table forced them out.
