Alginite

nounStandard termMining

A maceral found in coal and oil shale formed from the fossilized remains of marine algae.

Alginite is a type of organic material present in kerogen, derived specifically from the cell walls of ancient algae. Under a microscope, it often fluoresces brightly when exposed to ultraviolet light. Geologists analyze the alginite content in source rocks because it is highly prone to generating liquid hydrocarbons when subjected to thermal maturation deep underground.

Heard on the job

The petrographic analysis shows high concentrations of alginite in this shale sequence, making it an excellent oil source rock.
