Simple harmonic motion

nounStandard termMechanical

A periodic oscillation where the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement.

A fundamental type of periodic motion in which an object moves back and forth through a central equilibrium point. The acceleration of the mass is always directed toward the center and is proportional to how far it has moved away. It serves as the baseline mathematical model for analyzing vibrations in springs, pendulums, and acoustic systems.
