Impulsive

adjectiveStandard termMechanical

A force applied over an extremely short duration creates a sudden change in momentum.

This describes forces that act momentarily, such as a hammer strike or an explosion, rather than continuously over time. In dynamics, these forces are modeled mathematically using the Dirac delta function because their magnitude is extremely high but their duration approaches zero. Engineers analyze these loads to determine how structures respond to sudden impacts or shock waves.

Heard on the job

The bracket failed because we only calculated for static loads and ignored the impulsive force from the actuator bottoming out.

Insider tip

When modeling impulsive loads in finite element analysis, you must use explicit dynamics solvers rather than implicit ones to capture the high-frequency stress waves accurately.
