A computer-controlled milling machine where the cutting spindle points straight down.

An automated milling machine equipped with a vertical spindle, an automatic tool changer, and a CNC control system. The cutting tool descends from above to machine the top face of a workpiece clamped to the table. It is the most common type of CNC machine in a typical job shop, ideal for flat plate work, drilling, and contouring.

Do not mix it up with

  • Horizontal machining center: A vertical machining center has a spindle pointing down, while a horizontal one has a spindle pointing sideways.
