A flat round tool, about the size and shape of its namesake, with a hole bored to fit one connector type so the ferrule sits exactly perpendicular to the polishing film. The installer moves the puck in figure 8 strokes across the film on a glass or rubber pad, working through coarser to finer grits. A wrong pad or worn puck gives bad end-face geometry, poor physical contact and higher loss.
That's an ST puck, you need the SC one or you'll polish the ferrule at an angle.
