Field head

nounStandard termFasteners

The expanded end of a rivet formed during the installation process.

The field head is the deformed portion of a rivet shank created during installation to lock the fastener in place. It is formed by upsetting the bucktail with a rivet gun and bucking bar, or by pulling a mandrel in a blind rivet. Its final shape and diameter dictate the pull-out strength of the joint.
