Lanarkshire disease

nounStandard termFarming

A destructive fungal root rot that primarily affects strawberry plants.

A serious soil-borne disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora fragariae, which rots the root system of strawberry plants. Infected plants show stunted growth, wilting, and a characteristic red discoloration in the core of the roots. Because the spores can survive in wet soil for years, managing it requires strict sanitation, resistant varieties, and excellent field drainage.
