Cucumber mosaic virus is a destructive viral disease that affects hundreds of plant species, including cucurbits, tomatoes, and ornamentals. It is primarily transmitted by aphids feeding on infected sap, though it can also spread through contaminated tools or seeds. Infected plants exhibit yellow mottling, distorted leaves, and severely reduced yields, and must be destroyed as there is no chemical cure.
The peppers in the high tunnel are showing classic CMV symptoms, so we need to pull them out before the aphids spread it further.
Because it relies on insect vectors, rigorous aphid control and removing perennial weed hosts around the field are the only effective ways to prevent CMV outbreaks.
