Electric potential

nounStandard termElectrotechnology

The amount of work energy needed to move a unit of electric charge from a reference point to a specific location.

The scalar quantity of potential energy per unit charge at a given location in a static electric field. Measured in volts, it defines the driving force that would cause charge to flow if a conductive path were provided. In practical power systems, the reference point is usually local earth, defined as zero potential.

Heard on the job

We calculate the electric potential at the surface of the conductor to ensure it stays below the corona threshold.

Do not mix it up with

  • Voltage: Electric potential is the absolute energy level at one point, whereas voltage is the difference in potential between two points.
