A programmable unijunction transistor is a three-terminal semiconductor device consisting of four alternating layers (PNPN). Unlike a standard unijunction transistor, its trigger voltage can be explicitly set using an external voltage divider connected to its gate. They are primarily used in relaxation oscillators and timing circuits.

The old strobe light uses a PUT to dump the timing capacitor into the trigger transformer.
