MiniDisc

nounStandard termElectronics

A magneto-optical storage medium designed for digital audio recording and playback.

A cartridge-enclosed magneto-optical disc format originally developed for consumer audio. It stores data by using a laser to heat the magnetic layer while a magnetic head writes the data, and reads it back optically. Though largely obsolete for general consumers, the format remains a benchmark for early digital compression and portable robust media.

Heard on the job

I pulled an old MiniDisc player from the scrap pile to harvest its optical pickup.
