GST stands for GeSbTe, a chalcogenide glass used extensively in rewritable optical discs and non-volatile phase-change random-access memory (PRAM). By applying specific heat pulses, the material can be toggled between an amorphous state with high electrical resistance and a crystalline state with low resistance. This physical change allows data to be stored and read reliably.

We're analyzing the GST layer under the electron microscope to see if thermal cycling caused material segregation.
