This NASA mission was launched to determine the nature of hydrogen signatures at the lunar poles. It functioned by directing its spent upper rocket stage to deliberately crash into a permanently shadowed crater. The main satellite then flew through the resulting debris plume, analyzing the dust and vapor for water ice before crashing itself.
