This joint NASA and USGS project was designed to ensure the uninterrupted collection of multispectral imagery of the Earth's surface. It carries instruments to capture visible, near-infrared, and thermal data used for agriculture, climate research, and land management. Upon achieving orbit and completing checkout, it was officially renamed Landsat 8.
